The main character is Tama, born a slave on a huge cotton plantation in North Carolina. Her biological father is her master and her mother is a slave. The story opens with her mother’s death and Tama’s decision to flee. While on the run, she meets Hakan, a Creek Indian who is also a fugitive, running from men are out to hang him. He takes Tama to his village deep in the Georgia forest, where she will hide, while adapting to the Indian way of life and trying to hold onto her tentative freedom. Love blooms between Tama and Hakan, but it is threatened by a series of events that will eventually put Tama in great danger. Elinore Wardlaw is a white woman living in Ohio who actively supports the Underground Railroad. She is married to a southern man from whom she has been separated for four years while he serves in the Army at Fort Gibson in Indian Territory. Her decision to take her young son and join her husband in Indian territory puts her in a position to befriend a young black girl named Julee, who needs Elinore’s help to escape a desperate situation. Julee has no past, and she is yearning for a future far away from a life of servitude and poverty. She believes she is a nobody, a person without importance to anyone, but she turns out to be the key to both Tama and Elinore’s happiness.

This novel gives you another perspective on slavery . When a young mulatto slave girl escapes from the planation, her father ( master of the plantation) wants her back. She manages to run into an Indian that's on the run from the law. After she saves his life, he agrees to take her to his people, where other free blacks and slaves live. While living among the Indians, she starts to develop feelings for him. His sister wants him to marry another Indian girl, since he will one day be the leader of the tribe. Once his father dies, the white men come in and run them off their lands. They will now live on land the government has allotted them. The mulatto is turned over to a trader that will return her to her father. You will have to read this novel to see how this drama will unfold.Product details

In A Thousand Steps, Anita Bunkley combines a keen eye for history and historic details with a portrayal of many current political themes. She draws you into this pre-Civil War world immediately and she doesn't let you go. The last 40 plus pages are impossible to put down. This is a must read for anyone interested in the U.S westward expansion, slavery, Black/White/Native American relations or just a good love story.
A really great narrative story that should appeal to most readers. I took a chance to read something different than my normal sci-fi, fantasy, and thrillers and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the book. My only complaint is that the story wrapped up in a rush and didn't feel like the other parts of the book. Overall a thumbs up.
This book is a well written, engrossing story of the intersection of three disparate races Native Americans suffering at the hands of the white man, Blacks still oppressed by slavery, and white people both good and bad! I thoroughly enjoyed this book from both a historic and social perspective! The only distraction was too much description of sexual interactions - Upon realizing this, I skipped past them and it did not detract from the story. A MUST READ!
First of all, this title is excellently written. Second of all, I learned more about racism's roots in this country than from the many books I have read, documentaries I have watched, news reports I've listened to. Bunkley goes to the root and the heart of the issue and teaches lessons you aren't even aware you are learning. The writing is so alive, I could see and feel the experiences, sense the confusion, the fear, the joy, the heartache, the hate and the love. Seldom do I find a title I can't put down...this is one of those titles. All I can say, it do yourself a favor, read, enjoy and learn.
Great historical read. After grabbing my interest in the first chapter, the storyline continued to develop in depth and intrigue. I especially enjoyed how the author developed the characters. Women were strong, brave, fiercely determined, etc. without being masculine; and male characters possessed sensitivity and gentleness. The author brings to life the very different and difficult personal toll on the characters’ lives during that period in America’s history. This book has a little something for all readers, intrigue, historical accuracy and romance.
Excellent, well-written story that transports the reader to the setting of the wilderness of the 1850s South and West. I became completely captivated by the characters and cared about what happened to them (well, most of them, but not the "bad guys"). What kept this from being a 5-star read was the ending. Two of the characters did 180-degree turns, one unconvincingly and the other with no explanation at all. Following the breath-holding action that preceded it, it seemed like a letdown.
Disappointing ending aside, I nevertheless highly recommend this story and hope Anita Bunkley will write more of these. I've enjoyed her other period novels as well Black Gold, Starlight Passage, etc.
I enjoyed the complex characters and plot. There were so many exciting moments in the story. During my vacation travels in Arkansas and Oklahoma, I learned about the Trail of Tears and the sad plight of the American Indians forced from their homeland and into reservations. I have visited Fort Smith and various reservations. Similarly, when I visited the Southern US, I learned about the horrors of slavery when seeing historical places and exhibits. This book made history truly come alive for me. I look forward to reading more books by the author.
